Natsume Yuujinchou 9: bondage

The hat, that shirt color, and a cat on a leash outdoor; yep, this is NatsuYuu

Not as strong as the prior episodes but still better than most other shows this season, NatsuYuu 9 explores the theme of bondage.

The symbolisms are everywhere from the very beginning where Natsume has a leash on Nyanko-sensei who needs to walk off some weights before causing an earthquake, to the yet-another-cyclops youkai who has a rope tied around her neck to keep her obligated in haunting some warehouse. Even her hand being bandaged is a symbol of her eventual almost-fatal encounter with Natori, the fabulous movie star moonlighting as an exorcist, who had bandaged not only her hand but also her heart long ago.

Underneath all that coldness, Natsume can look cute too.

However, the effects of the bondage of the rope on her neck and that of the bandage on her hand are very different, which, I suppose, carry the message of the episode. The cyclops youkai still ends up retaining her status as enlisted but is now under the new name Hiiragi to go with her new servitude under Natori, of which only she can perceive as happiness. So, I suppose it is not the lack of liberty that takes away happiness but whom you enslaved yourself to.

The striking resemblance between Natsume and Natori begs us to compare them. Like Natsume, Natori has taken his share of the shit from people when he was a kid. Unlike Natsume, he takes up the art of exorcism and executes fatal spells, such as the thunder he casts upon Hiiragi, with full intent on terminating the youkai. Ironically, he ends up gathering more of them, those who worship him, than before and doesn’t seem to mind at all. Quite curious though is why those youkai’s would assist him in exorcising their own kind. Is this the power of Natori’s charm, a similar charm that Natsume displays?

Maybe I haven’t been too perceptive, but this is the first episode in which I see Natsume featuring some real strength that has been spoken of about his grandma Reiko, by the way he breaks through both Natori’s paper doll spell and his assistant’s hair wrap with his sheer will alone. So, perhaps his “power” is probably not his charm alone, as I have guessed before. Nyanko-sensei has better watched out before Natsume realizes his hidden power if he still wants to consider him as lunch someday.

Speaking of which, Nyanko really comes through as a bodyguard as he basically takes a bullet for Natsume. So many times already he passes the opportunities to see Natsume drop dead and takes the Book of Friends for himself, which I thought is his goal. But instead, he keeps his tenuous bondage with Natsume as pet, master, bodyguard, and perhaps even friend. With only a few episodes left, I fear we won’t see much of Nyanko-sensei’s past that may reveal some of his intention with Book and, more interestingly, with Natsume.

Is it normal that I feel strangely attracted to this?
